This paper sheds light on how the Sewol ferry incident influenced Korean society in the context of the 2014 Korean local election. By comparing party identification and feeling thermometer ratings toward political parties, we examine how partisanship was influenced by emotions, such as outrage or frustration caused by the Sewol ferry incident. Furthermore, we discuss how the electorate reflected these emotions on their vote choices. Using panel survey data, which extend over the 2012 presidential election and the 2014 local election, and a survey experiment that we devised to evoke memories of the disaster, we demonstrate that Korean voters have retained stable party identification even after undergoing the national disaster, yet at the same time that their short-term feelings toward political parties were severely exacerbated. We show such disappointments with politics in general were expressed as adverse feelings toward both parties, rather than resulting in punishing solely the incumbent party in the election. On the other hand, analyses on vote choices reveal that citizens constantly make instant and emotional assessments on political parties and actively reflect those short-term appraisals on their vote decisions, while their party identification still remains a long-lasting and solid basis of political attitudes. Politics of emotion, in which the electorate promptly update their attitudes toward political parties based on their feelings and intuitions, may overlook the fine prints in policy and platforms, but can still work as a mechanism to improve political accountability. |
